Spotify has confirmed that it’s testing a new podcast discovery audio newsfeed feature to improve podcast discoverability in the app.
What is podcast discoverability?
Podcast discoverability refers to how people discover your show and there are so many factors that play into how people discover your show. It could be because you featured an influencer on an episode, your show appeared in a listener’s algorithm on their streaming platform or they came across a clip you shred on social media.
With the rapid increase of celebrities venturing into podcasting, this has made it significantly difficult for independent podcast creators to be discovered pondering the question: are celebrities ruining podcasting?
Alas: enter Spotify’s audio newsfeed.
What is the Spotify podcast audio newsfeed?
Spotify has over 1.2million podcasts as of 2021 and they are creating an audio newsfeed similar to TikTok’s vertical swipe to enhance discoverability of podcasts.
This feed will use 60second audio clips of your show (see below) using technology acquired from Podz: an app Spotify bought last year for $49million.
“At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience,” a spokesperson said. “Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We don’t have any further news to share at this time.”
What does this mean for my podcast?
It means that whether your show is produced independently or via a studio/network, audio clips of your show will stand the chance of being directly placed infront of potential listeners of your show!
There has not been any updates on the release of this feature but rest assured that we may see this release later this year.
