All major social media apps are rushing to create audio features within their platforms so it’s no surprise that Spotify (one of the biggest podcast powerhouses) is looking to embed this feature on the app.

Over the past couple of years, Spotify has invested alot of money into becoming THE number one podcasting giant: from the exclusive signings, focus on women creators, in-app subscriptions (announced last week) and more during their Stream On event.

Their expansion into the audio sphere via the acquisition of Betty Labs, the creators of audio platform Locker Room is BIG news.

Spotify Chairman and CEO, Daniel Ek explained that Spotify is “very interested in” the idea of adding social features to the service, and that the company “obviously pays close attention to everything that’s happening in markets around the world and new developments in audio”.

Added Ek: “I’ve said this many times before. We’re in the early innings of the innovation of the audio formats and creator-to-fan interactivity is definitely one of those things that we’re paying attention to and looking at.

“We are conducting experiments on it already… I don’t have any sort of specific here to announce, but there are plenty more things to come in the coming months of this year as well when it comes to creator to fan engagements.”

Betty Labs Founder and CEO Howard Akumiah, added: “We are excited to join forces with Spotify and contribute to building the future of audio – we’ll invest more in our product, open the experience to Spotify’s audience, diversify our content offerings, and continue expanding the community we’ve built.

This acquisition “builds on its work to create the ‘future formats of audio’ and will accelerate Spotify’s entry into the live audio space”.

Spotify will leverage their “unparalleled data, insights, and strength in user experience to build out a full complement of live and on-demand offerings for users and creators across the globe. The new live audio experience is a powerful complement that will enhance and extend the on-demand experience we provide today.”
