Amazon Podcasts

Tech giant Amazon Music (more like Amazon Podcasts) joined the podcasting space last year in September 2020, directly competing with Spotify and Apple after launching its own streaming service for podcasts.

“Our customers’ listening habits are constantly evolving, and we know they’re looking to us to provide them with a rich experience rooted in music and entertainment,” said Amazon Music vice president Steve Boom.

“We’re thrilled to offer customers a convenient podcast listening experience that fits their lifestyle,” said Amazon Music podcasts director Kintan Brahmbhatt.

Offering over 70,000 podcast shows on the platform, Amazon Music subscribers will be able to listen to podcasts like Crime Junkie and Revisionist History, along with some all new projects from DJ Khaled, Dan Patrick, Will Smith, and more.

The podcasts are included in Amazon’s streaming service in the US, Britain, Germany and Japan and on all Amazon Music subscription tiers (free and Unlimited plans).

Interestingly, the Infinite Dial market research study from Edison Research and Triton Digital, for example, shows that within the past year Amazon Music overtook Apple Music as the no. 2 most popular paid subscription music service in the U.S., behind Spotify.

From that perspective, it’s significant for the podcast business in general that Amazon and Spotify are adopting the same model of bundling podcasts into a paid music subscription service and including a growing number of exclusive podcasts in that service. This could come to be one of the dominant revenue models in podcasting.
